And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? (Exodus 3:11)
The biblical Moses, the legendary prophet and the great leader of the human beings, standing on the brink of where the history creates the legend, and the legend makes history. He was the only one who was out of the limits of the laws of nature and entered in the scope of the divine genesis, in point of fact he has been facing the halfway between the earth and the highest world.
Sculptural images of Moses were created both in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The outstanding works of art – statue of Moses by C. Sluter for "Well of Prophets", and the most famous image of Moses – Statue of Michelangelo in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome.
The work of the House "Lobortas" is another artistic reading of the image. Moses is captured in the moment when he received the force from God to part the waters of Red Sea for his people to be able to cross it. The greatest image of human maturity, although tormented by internal struggles with the shoulders, bent by the burden of the great mission, but motivated and unstoppable.
A special place in the composition is taken by the Staff of Moses, endowed with the miracle-working force. This Staff was made in the twilight of the sixth day of creation, and was given to Adam by God in the Garden of Eden, and then changed prophets and was retained in such a way for Moses, who was destined to release the people of Israel. If you look closer at the Moses composition, you can see the image of the ten Plagues of Egypt on the staff, able to turn into the snake.
Moses assigns all his achievements to the God and requires absolute loyalty to Him, i.e. to the ideals of justice. Therefore the identity of Moses has become a driving force in the history of mankind, which is in need in our days more than ever.
