The vision of crafting the sculptural fountain dedicated to Archangel Michael, the Defender of Kyiv, stems from a singular jewellery interior miniature conceived by the Lobortas Classic Jewellery House. In this exquisite creation, Archangel Michael is portrayed as the celestial guardian of ancient Kyiv, soaring above a church bell, its upper section embracing the slopes and hills of the city — cradling the world-renowned and time-honoured cathedrals of the Ukrainian capital.
A sacred prayer to Saint Michael the Archistrategos is engraved upon the lower part of the bell. Beneath it, a fountain flows, mirroring the swift and powerful currents of the Dnieper River. From various sides, dragons unleash streams of water, cascading towards the centre — symbolizing the adversarial forces that dare to stand against the luminous army of God. Leading this divine legion is Archangel Michael, the radiant chieftain of the angelic hosts. He is armed with a flaming golden sword and a shield woven from the celestial essence of heavenly forces — Cherubim and Seraphim. His shield bears the Star of the Virgin at its core, while its outer edge is inscribed with a Christogram, the sacred emblem of Jesus Christ.
This artistic composition harmoniously unites Orthodox iconographic traditions with the grandeur of European sculptural artistry.
Unveiled on 19 September 2020, in honour of the fountain's grand inauguration, the bas-relief meticulously captures the architectural and symbolic contours of the fountain. Archangel Michael, majestic and luminous, hovers above the bell with his watchful gaze resting upon the city below. He is its eternal guardian, celestial patron, and unwavering emblem of Kyiv’s indomitable spirit, divine will, and enduring memory. Thus shall it ever be!
