With a holster-butt attached and a 20-round magazine, the M.712 Mauser in its combat properties approached submachine guns. During World War II, Mauser automatic pistols were widely used in the ground air defense forces, and a certain number of them in the reconnaissance and sabotage units of the Wehrmacht and in the Luftwaffe. M.712 automatic pistols were produced from 1932 to 1938. In total, a little more than 100 thousand pistols of this model were manufactured.

Several thousand M.712 pistols were sold to China, more than a hundred were delivered to the Yugoslav army. For about 10 years, the 712 model was in service with the army and police of China and Yugoslavia.
