The image of the Cossack-Kharakternyk is interpreted as an embodiment of inner strength, knowledge, and spiritual protection. In Cossack tradition, Kharakternyks were believed to possess special abilities — guardians of martial knowledge, faith, and the invisible connection between the warrior and the land.
The figure is presented in tense motion—at the moment of readiness for action. The plasticity of the body emphasizes concentration and control, where physical strength is combined with inner discipline. A particular accent is the cloak, unfolding behind the back in the shape of the map of Ukraine: it transforms into a symbol of the native land, which the warrior carries in his heart and at the same time defends.
The historical image acquires a contemporary dimension, becoming a metaphor for today’s defender — one who stands for the land not only with weapons, but with strength of spirit. Here, struggle is not aggression, but a form of preserving identity, space, and freedom.
As historian Dmytro Yavornytsky wrote, among the Cossacks were “Kharakternyks” whom “neither fire, nor water, nor sabre, nor ordinary bullet could harm.” In this work, that notion of invulnerability is reimagined as a symbol of resilience.
