Ukraine is a land of giants and heroes.

Few are aware that Taihō Kōki, the 190-kilogram sumo wrestler and national hero of Japan, known in his homeland as Ivan Boryshko, is of Ukrainian descent by his father and Japanese by his mother. For his invincibility, Ivan earned the moniker of The Great Yokozuna of The 20th Century. Until 2015, he remained an undefeated sumo wrestler for 44 years, clinching the Imperial Cup a record 32 times. At the tender age of 16, he took part in combat competitions for the first time, and 4 years later, he was already selected for the elite of sumo masters of the highest Makunouchi league. A year later, Kōki was bestowed the title of yokozuna, the supreme title in sumo wrestling. This was a true sensation, as no one had ever ascended so high at the age of 21. It was then he received his nickname “Taihō” meaning “the Big Phoenix.”

In 2002, Taihō visited Ukraine and became convinced of his profound Ukrainian roots. His spirit left a lasting impression on the samurai clan, and in July 2015 (posthumously), our compatriot became the first and only sumo wrestler to be honored with the title of Honorary Citizen of Japan.
