The tree in bloom is one of the most ancient artefact symbols of humanity’s spiritual culture. It stands as the central axis, connecting the sky and the land, the soul and its ascent toward spiritual heights, inner wisdom, and the enigmatic laws of existence. In antiquity, this symbol was associated with the mystical forces of nature and the workings of Divine Providence, which guide one on the path to destiny and help reveal life’s potential.

The tree of life is a universal and enduring image that has lived in the consciousness of many peoples around the globe for centuries. Its presence can be traced back to the Bronze Age in Europe and the Middle East, persisting today in traditional cultures across North America, Africa, Australia, India, and Europe.

Over time, this symbolism found profound resonance among the Ukrainian people — woven not only into everyday life and ritual, but also into religious beliefs, mystical traditions, and cosmogonic perceptions of the Universe. Our ancestors saw the tree of life as a reflection of the cosmogenic hierarchy and of the human inner world — a battleground where good and evil meet.

This symbol appears on Trypillian pottery, handwoven carpets, early iconography, and the ornamentation of Ukrainian vyshyvanka, rushnyk, and pysanka. For our ancestors, the tree of life represented a heavenly realm — a bridge between worlds, where all things and beings occupy their rightful place.
