«Values»: An exhibition on Ukrainian identity has opened at the War Museum

The exhibition Values has opened at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War — a joint project between the Museum and the Lobortas Classic Jewellery House.

Welcoming addresses at the opening ceremony were delivered by:

Dmytro Hainetdynov — Deputy Director General for Scientific and Stock Work of the Museum;
Anastasia Lobortas — Creative Director of the Lobortas Classic Jewellery House;
Nataliia Sydorenko — Head of Communications for the project;
Anton Logov — curator of the exhibition.

The exhibition brings together small-scale sculptural compositions in which historical memory, national archetypes and the experience of modern warfare converge to form a cohesive artistic space. At the heart of this are the concepts that define Ukrainian identity: freedom, dignity, memory, responsibility, continuity of tradition, and the capacity for resistance.

During the curatorial tour led by Anastasia Lobortas, visitors learned that the exhibition’s central theme is a reinterpretation of the image of Mother Ukraine. Rendered in the format of small-scale sculpture, this symbol takes on a more human dimension and creates a different kind of interaction with the viewer — one that is more personal and intimate, while the combination of precious materials, gemstones and minerals emphasises the monument’s grandeur and symbolism.

A series of sculptures is arranged around the central figure, combining the Cossack epic, national symbols and representations of modern Ukrainian resistance. This juxtaposition reflects the continuity of history — from past generations to those defending the country today. Alongside traditional imagery, elements of modern warfare also appear, including motifs of the latest arms, while some works incorporate fragments of the aggressor’s weaponry, reinterpreted as part of the artistic form.

The exhibition has an intimate setting, allowing visitors to focus on each piece and experience it on a personal level.

The exhibition is on view in the main building of the War Museum (Mother Ukraine monument) from April 24 to May 31.
