The Maltese cross is a historical symbol. This cross was used by the knights of the island of Malta and served to identify the knights themselves and distinguish them from their enemies. Maltese Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, was a religious stratum of society, and was founded around 1070 A.D. The main task of the Order was to help and protect pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land.
